Simon Love's Art

Hey there! Welcome to my portfolio/art site. My name is Simon and I am a recent graduate from the Animation course at IADT Dun Laoghaire and I am currently looking for work. Below is my showreel and some images, and above are links to pages full of my work. I created my final year film in 3D using Blender so that's where I feel most at home but I'm happy to try other software and styles. I'm mostly interested in modelling, character animation and visual development. So have a click around, I hope you see something you like!

Recent Work:

This project started out as just being an animation project. I wasn't going to design, model or rig any characters, I was going to keep the lighting simple and I wasn't going to model any props unless it was completely necessary. I just wanted to have some character acting for my showreel since most of it is more sort of action based. Unfortunately as I worked on it, I couldn't resist messing about with everything aside from the animation.

I had a bit of trouble coming up with a scene idea initially so I just repuroposed a storyboard that I'd created for my 4th Year film. I didn't really alter it at all since I didn't really plan on sharing the full scene anywhere so I'm not sure the plot or the gag really work as well as they could. Also the camera was just going to stay still (aside from when it was cutting between characters) so its not as dynamic as it could be but I'm happy enough with it. I don't usually move the camera around much within scenes so it was fun to experiment with it.

I had a dream a few months ago where I was suddenly woken and asked to leave a hotel by someone who works there. I tried to protest this and he wouldn't listen at first, until a huge group of people streamed into the room, coming from a hallway that was connected to the back of it. He introduced them as being two dance groups, "The Bones" and "The Beans", and said that if I could beat both of them in a dance battle I'd be allowed to stay. I ran away then and awoke for real.

Something about "the Bones and the Beans" sounded so funny to me as names for groups of people and I was inspired to make something based on it. I really wanted to try and make something that's designed for TikTok and YouTube Shorts and the likes to see what kind of attention I'd get there, and I also really wanted to make something sort of sports based after watching the Olympics loads during the summer. I didn't actually watch any of the breakdancing (aside from a few clips of the Australian dancer) and I was more interested in the gymnastics but I didn't have a dream about gymnastics so something based on that will have to wait.

This is a short sequence I made over the past month or so, with a character I modelled and rigged. I wanted to build experience in all of those areas (especially rigging! it's hard!). I learned a lot making it. read more
